



Sidestriped Shrimp Box
Sidestriped shrimp have a sweet, fresh, slightly briny flavor, with a delicate but firm, buttery texture. They’re mostly herbivores, which is what gives them their sweet taste—sweeter than that of spot shrimp. They’re also much smaller than spot shrimp and have thinner shells, which make them quick to cook!
Sidestriped shrimp are one of five different species of shrimp found in Alaskan waters. The beautiful orange shells with white stripes running laterally along their sides are what gives the shrimp their name. They’re harvested in a very small fishery, where only ten fishermen participate. The fishermen use beam trawl gear, which skim a lightweight net along the ocean floor with rollers (rather than dragging a weighted net with heavy doors, like the notorious “otter bottom trawl” gear). The beam trawls are used exclusively in sandy, muddy habitats, such as around the mouths of rivers, where the ocean floor is already accustomed to frequent disruption. The fishermen also use a fish excluder, which creates an opening in the net for fish to pass through, thereby mitigating bycatch. These environmentally conscious characteristics are what have allowed this fishery to be sustainably harvested for over 100 years, with biologists reporting minimal concern for ecosystem impact.
Our sidestriped shrimp will arrive sealed in one pound packages, with about 45 shrimp per pound. The thin shells are easy to peel off, but you don’t have to remove them prior to cooking. What are one-time boxes?
Although we try our best to forecast exactly how much of a season’s harvest to purchase from our small-boat
fishermen, wild fisheries have some natural variability. It’s both an art and a
science to decide how much to buy and how to distribute the catch as evenly as possible among share members.
More important and ultimately, species availability is dependent on the health of the fisheries themselves.
When we have a surplus of delicious premium quality seafood after our subscription boxes are
packed, we make it available to our members or folks who want to try before
they buy shares.
We also have unique and seasonal opportunities to purchase additional seafood from our fishermen or trusted
partners (but not necessarily enough for all the shares). When we do, we’ll add them to our one-time box inventory for you to
order.
Is this the same fish I get in subscription boxes?
Well, yes and no. The seafood in one-time orders is of the same premium quality from our fishermen or trusted
partners. However, not all items in the one-time order will be available in monthly subscription boxes and vice versa.
Can I just order one type of fish?
Sometimes we will offer single species boxes in through one-time orders in addition to mixed species boxes. We are not
currently customizing any of our one-time order boxes.
Do you offer discounts when I order more than one box?
Members will receive 10% off one-time order seafood boxes. This applies to ordering
one or many. If you are not a member, we encourage you to become one, as access to special discounts and sales
are another great membership perk!
