The F/V Dryas

Spencer Severson

King Salmon, Coho Salmon

Spencer kicked off his fishing career at the ripe old age of 12, jigging for California halibut off the coast of San Diego in a tiny, aluminum skiff. Today, Spencer is a man who wears many hats. He is a skilled and seasoned commercial diver, has sailed the seas for years at a time, and has honed the craft of carpentry. After making his way to Alaska in the 1970s, Spencer regularly dove for herring roe in Prince William Sound, but when the Exxon Valdez spill largely devastated the fishery, he quickly turned his sights to fishing.

After moving to Sitka in 1990 and crewing on a few larger boats, Spencer decided to combine two of his great loves—fishing and sailing. After John Skeele of the F/V Sunfish gave him a lead on the F/V Dryas, Spencer spent countless hours laboring to get the boat back into working shape. Today, the F/V Dryas is one of the few wind-powered fishing boats operating out of Sitka.
